From the moment I could remember knowing who to use a pencil, I was drawing. I had a fondness for superheroes, and my first memories as a child were drawing stick figures with capes and Superman logos on their chests, as well as watching my mother sketch profiles of women’s faces. It was inevitable that my skills were going to advance. By the time I was in grade school, I was sketching abstract images and painting phenomenally in elementary school art classes. When I was 8 years old, I had won a contest that sent a work of art of mine to the Phoenix Art Museum to be put on display. While I never realized the significance of that moment until I got older (sadly, I threw the piece away as a child), I feel it was the first sign of my true calling. From then on, my ambition was focused on being the best artist I could be. I learned figure drawing from drawing comic books, and had even started a fictitious comic company with my friends in the 5th grade. Throughout high school, my notebooks were filled with random sketches and doodles that would make one think that I never paid attention at all in class. I had dabbled in watercolor and acrylic painting throughout my childhood and adolescence, but really didn’t start seriously painting until 2009. Painting is one of the most therapeutic things one can do, and I have found peace as well as a great sense of purpose through painting. I am always thinking of my next masterpiece…
“Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage.” Billy Corgan of the Smashing Pumpkins angrily screamed that into a taped down microphone over and over again on the stage. Those words echoed throughout America, be it on tv or radio or computer. That one line sparked an entire generation of post corporate takeover into an emotional musical journey that is, even today, being heard all around the world.I will say the very same lyric was what did me in. It inspired me to pick up playing guitar and songwriting when I was the very awkward and most impressionable age of 12. I taught myself through an acoustic guitar book by Russ Shipton that was a hand-me-down from my father. He used to strum chords for me when I was a wee Dante, sometimes softly singing an old Italian song. I’ve written a thousand songs and I will write a thousand more if time wills it. I have turned bad days into creative nights and lost loves into poetic memorials. I first started experimenting with sound recording when I was around 14 years old, using an old cassette recorder with a built-in microphone. I would record mixtapes and design covers for them and everything. AS I grew older I began playing in various bands. My first singing gig was with a Tucson, AZ band called Ohmen. In 2002-2003, I played guitar in a punk rock band called Starter Pistol. We played many shows throughout Tucson and built a steady fan base of punkers and maniacs. We recorded a demo titled “In Session” (which included a cover of ‘I Wear My Sunglasses At Night’) and later finished, but never released, a full length CD. We broke up in 2003 and I then began pursuing a career as a solo musician. “The Fullerton EP” was my first EP as a solo artist that I recorded in Chicago IL in 2006. After recording this EP, I got this mean streak in me and I continued recording into April 2007, ultimately finishing more than 20 tracks for my upcoming full length record.
“UnderTheBlueMoon”, my first ever full length album, was released in June 2007 . It is comprised of 13 tracks that were written from 2001 to 2007 (Annie being the oldest and Be Right Out the newest). The record was met with a warm response. A music video was made for the song “Naked” in Tucson by my good friend Tim Tompkins. This record is a very spiritual and heartfelt journey through the ups and downs of love, life, change, and pressure, all taking place under the lunar light that shines on us all at least twice a month (or once, i’m not an astronomer, gimme a break lol). Tim Tompkins, formerly of Tucson’s “Big Word Show” gave the album tremendous praise, prompting this review by Mr. Tompkins: “Dante Febbraro’s ‘UnderTheBlueMoon’ gives hope to the hopeless romantic” In mid 2007, I began work on a 4 song EP titled “Fouria” which was later released in December. This record was a very experimental process in which I incorporated some different instruments and played with different sounds to give the songs an eerie yet warm feeling.
Writing songs gave me the confidence to also begin writing stories. I was always an imaginative storyteller and have written countless short stories and poems. In 2005, I began working on movie scripts (which have unfortunately gone unfinished) as well as my first novel, titled Bastard Son which I hope to finish by mid-2011.
My future, although obviously uncertain, will be to continue making art and music and pushing my boundaries in ways that will satisfy my creative urges and please the eyes, ears, and intellect of the people who get to experience my art. I am very grateful for the people who have supported me in my artistic and musical endeavors and I can definitely say that I will not disappoint them. Enjoy the website and all it has to offer, and keep checking in for more updates and all that good stuff!
-Dante.
